Description
Sherree Bryant shared with the membership of Aux 5394 the significance of loyalty day: President Dwight D. Eisenhower first issued a proclamation to designate May 1 as Loyalty Day in 1955. Yet the day was first observed nationally in 1921 as Americanization Day which came in response to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and reportedly to counter International Workers Day or May Day. That day backed by socialists and communists aimed to celebrate workers on May 1. According to the U.S. Code ""Loyalty Day is a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American Freedom."" In his proclamation Eisenhower declared that it was appropriate to have a day for ""solemn re-evaluation of those priceless gifts of freedom which are our heritage to the end that we may stimulate and renew that high sense of patriotism which has signalized our glorious history as a Nation."" Eisenhower also called ""for its appropriate observance by the people of this Nation"" when he made Loyalty Day an official recurring day of commemoration in 1958. Celebrations on Loyalty Day can feature parades and music as well as services to honor American veterans.
